Water Hyacinth Kendi Pendant Lamp Shade is a woven lamp shade only — the fixture wiring, socket, and bulb are not included, sourced locally instead for electrical compliance in your market. What you’re buying is the shade itself: a narrow-necked, round-bodied form built over a vertical bar cage and wrapped in Water Hyacinth.
The shape borrows directly from the kendi, a traditional water vessel found across Java and much of maritime Southeast Asia, historically used for both storage and ceremonial pouring. We didn’t round off the proportions to make it more “lamp-like” — the narrow neck and full belly are kept close to the original vessel shape, which is what gives this piece more presence than a generic round or oval shade.
The vertical bars under the water hyacinth weave hold the jug shape rigid — without them, a fiber-only construction this narrow at the neck would sag out of shape over time. It’s a semi-open structure: more light escapes than our fully enclosed round shades, less than our open-lattice designs.
Water hyacinth for this piece, like the rest of our range, comes from rivers and lakes around Klaten and Yogyakarta in Central Java.
