Natural fiber baskets — whether woven from rattan, seagrass, water hyacinth, or banana fiber — are durable, functional, and beautiful when properly maintained. But like all natural materials, they respond to their environment and require simple, consistent care to perform well over time. For retailers and interior designers supplying natural fiber products to end consumers, a clear care guide is a practical asset: it reduces product returns, builds customer confidence, and extends the useful life of products that represent genuine craftsmanship.
This guide covers care and maintenance for the four primary natural fiber materials used in handwoven baskets from Indonesia, along with general principles that apply across all categories. The differences between materials matter more than many buyers expect — care requirements for rattan versus seagrass, in particular, are distinct enough that material-specific advice is more useful than general “natural fiber” guidance.
All natural fiber baskets share a fundamental characteristic: they are made from plant-derived materials that respond to moisture and light. Understanding this informs every aspect of their care. Natural fibers absorb moisture from the air in humid conditions and release it in dry conditions — a natural process that, managed correctly, maintains the fiber’s flexibility and prevents brittleness. Excessive moisture, however, can lead to mould, mildew, and structural weakening. Excessive dryness can cause fibers to become brittle and crack, particularly at tight weave points and bends.
The single most important rule for natural fiber baskets is to keep them away from direct, prolonged moisture. This means not using them as containers for wet items without a liner, not placing them in bathrooms or other high-humidity environments without good ventilation, and not washing them with water unless necessary and with careful drying afterwards. For outdoor use, natural fiber baskets are not recommended without protective treatment, as prolonged outdoor exposure to rain, dew, and direct sun will significantly shorten their lifespan.
For routine cleaning, dry methods are always preferable to wet. A soft brush, dry cloth, or compressed air (used gently) removes dust and light debris from the weave without introducing moisture. For indoor baskets in normal use, this is typically all the maintenance required on a regular basis.
Rattan is the most structurally robust of the common natural fiber materials. Its cane-like stems are naturally resilient, and a well-woven rattan basket will maintain its shape and structural integrity under normal use for many years. Rattan is also relatively tolerant of the natural humidity variations of an interior environment.
For routine cleaning, wipe rattan surfaces with a dry or very lightly dampened cloth to remove dust and surface marks. Avoid soaking rattan or submerging it in water — the inner core of the cane can absorb moisture that is slow to evaporate, potentially leading to weakening or splitting over time. If a rattan basket becomes wet, dry it as quickly as possible in a well-ventilated area, away from direct heat sources such as radiators or heaters, which can cause cracking.
To prevent rattan from drying out and becoming brittle — particularly in centrally heated interiors — an occasional light application of linseed oil or a purpose-made rattan oil can help maintain the material’s flexibility. Apply sparingly with a soft cloth and allow to absorb fully before use. Lacquered or painted rattan finishes do not require oil treatment and should be cleaned with a dry cloth only.
Rattan should be kept out of prolonged direct sunlight, which causes the natural colour to fade unevenly and can accelerate drying and brittleness at exposed surfaces. Rotating a decorative rattan basket periodically helps ensure even exposure.
Seagrass is a marine plant fiber that is naturally slightly more moisture-tolerant than rattan — a characteristic that makes it well suited to bathroom storage and laundry basket applications, provided it is not kept in a permanently wet environment. Its dense, soft weave gives seagrass baskets a distinctive texture and a naturally fresh, green-tinged colour that mellows to warm beige tones over time with normal light exposure.
For light cleaning, brush seagrass with a dry, soft-bristled brush to remove dust from the weave. For more thorough cleaning, a slightly dampened cloth or sponge can be used on the surface, taking care not to saturate the material. Spot-clean stains promptly by dabbing (not rubbing) with a damp cloth; rubbing can work the stain deeper into the weave and may cause the fiber to fray at the surface. After any damp cleaning, allow the basket to dry fully in a well-ventilated area before returning it to use or storage.
Seagrass is naturally resistant to minor moisture exposure and will not be damaged by the occasional damp environment — but sustained moisture, such as a continuously damp surface or standing water, will cause the fiber to soften, weaken, and eventually develop mould. For seagrass laundry baskets, avoid placing wet or damp laundry directly against the basket interior for extended periods without a fabric liner.
Water hyacinth is a fast-growing aquatic plant whose stems, when harvested and dried, produce a lightweight, slightly glossy fiber with natural tonal variation from cream to warm brown. Water hyacinth baskets are prized for their organic texture and their suitability for storage, display, and decorative applications.
Water hyacinth is more moisture-sensitive than rattan or seagrass and should be kept away from damp environments and direct water contact wherever possible. Clean with a dry or very lightly dampened soft cloth, working gently along the direction of the weave rather than across it. Do not immerse in water or apply liquid cleaners directly to the surface. If a water hyacinth basket becomes damp, dry it promptly in a warm, well-ventilated space — away from direct heat, which can cause the fiber to shrink unevenly and distort the weave.
Water hyacinth baskets are suitable for indoor use only. They should be placed away from windows receiving direct afternoon sun, which can fade the natural colour and make the fiber brittle at the exposed face over time.
Banana fiber — extracted from the stem of the banana plant — produces a naturally lustrous, slightly silky fiber with a distinctive warm tone that ranges from pale gold to rich amber. Woven banana fiber has a smooth, even surface that lends itself to both utility storage and decorative display.
Care for banana fiber follows similar principles to water hyacinth: dry cleaning is preferred, moisture exposure should be minimised, and the material should be stored or displayed away from prolonged direct sunlight. Unlike seagrass, banana fiber does not have inherent moisture tolerance and should not be used in damp environments. Clean with a soft, dry cloth or a very soft brush. For any stubborn marks, a slightly dampened cloth used sparingly and followed by thorough air-drying is the appropriate approach.
If natural fiber baskets need to be stored for an extended period — for example, seasonal retail stock or display props between uses — store them in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space, ideally elevated off the floor. Avoid storing in plastic bags or sealed containers, which trap moisture and promote mould. Stack nested baskets loosely to avoid compression distortion of the lower pieces, and consider placing a small silica gel sachet inside larger baskets to manage ambient humidity.
For baskets in regular household use, a light dusting with a soft brush or dry cloth once a month is sufficient. Baskets used for food storage (bread baskets, fruit bowls) benefit from a more frequent dry wipe-down to remove crumbs and residues. Deeper cleaning is only necessary if a basket has been marked by a spill or stored in conditions that have allowed dust to accumulate deeply in the weave.
Brief, incidental moisture is not harmful to most natural fiber baskets — seagrass in particular handles occasional dampness well. What damages natural fibers is sustained moisture: prolonged contact with wet surfaces, soaking in water, or storage in a damp environment. If a basket gets wet, dry it promptly in a well-ventilated area away from direct heat. Never use a tumble dryer, radiator, or hair dryer on a natural fiber basket.
For minor surface mould, allow the basket to dry thoroughly in sunlight (natural UV exposure helps inhibit mould growth), then brush the affected area gently with a stiff, dry brush to remove the dried mould. For more significant mould, a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water applied sparingly with a cloth and followed by thorough drying can be effective on rattan and seagrass. If mould has penetrated deeply into the weave structure, the basket is unlikely to be fully recoverable and should be replaced.
Untreated natural fiber baskets are not designed for permanent outdoor use. Exposure to rain, dew, and extended direct sun will cause the fibers to degrade significantly faster than in an interior environment. Lacquered rattan can tolerate covered outdoor use (a sheltered terrace or loggia in a dry climate) with appropriate care, but even lacquered pieces should be brought indoors in wet weather. For outdoor contexts, buyers should confirm the specific intended use with us before specifying a product.
A well-made rattan basket maintained correctly will typically last five to fifteen years in domestic use. Seagrass and water hyacinth baskets have a somewhat shorter lifespan of three to eight years due to lower fiber density, but this varies significantly by weave quality and care environment. The single greatest factor in reducing lifespan is moisture damage — baskets kept dry and away from sustained sunlight will consistently outlast those used in damp or high-humidity conditions.
